Right, I'll be upfront about something.

I'm English.

And I'm writing a newsletter about Independence Day.

The irony isn't lost on me. But here's the thing: independence is a universal idea. The freedom to choose how you spend your time, who you work with, where you work from, and how much you earn. That's not an American idea. That's a human one.
